Students injured in Samoa school bus crash

Local media report the bus was full of students who were on their way to school on the western side of Savaii.

The students were rushed to Sataua District Hospital for emergency treatment.

Eyewitnesses say the wooden bus swerved to avoid another vehicle and it rolled over and split into pieces.

The bus was transporting students from Falelima, Tufu and Neiafu to the Asau Secondary School when the accident happened.

Authorities are investigating the accident.

Samoa to host 2021 World Outrigger Canoeing championship

The International Va'a Federation Board awarded Samoa the championship following a unanimous vote in Marina Del Rey, California.

Samoan Global News reports the decision follows a bidding process which saw Samoa's two man delegation fly to the United States and present before the Board of Directors.

The event will held from 8th to 15th of August 2021, and is expected to bring 1,500 paddlers from 38 countries to the shores of Samoa.

Samoans training as squash referees

The Samoa Squash Association is working with the Oceania Squash Federation on training and accreditation. 

"Our aim is to have seven locals complete their assessments during the Games and receive Oceania Referee accreditation," said Carol Kawaljenko, Executive Officer of the Federation.

Samoa does not have qualified referees to an international level, so the federation funded a two-day training course, run by Chris Buckland from New Zealand.

The course was a success with more than ten participants from the Samoa Squash Association.

Colonial building in Apia will be pulled down, Samoa PM

Many efforts have been launched to try and restore the building but have been thwarted by the lack of finances.

Tuilaepa told Talamua Online that there have been a lot of dreamers who promised millions to preserve the building, and up to now no one has kept that promise.

He also referred to the former Head of State, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi who approached the German Chancellor during his official visit to Germany for assistance in preserving the building.

Don Opeloge reeling from shock wins at global championships

The 20 year-old says he was not expecting to win any medals especially as he was competing with a lot of experienced weightlifters from around the world.

Opeloge made history after he secured Samoa’s first ever-gold medal in the competition with a lift of 193kg.

He set a new personal best of 198kg with his final attempt to also win the overall title by one kilogram from Iran's Mohammad Hosseini.

About 5,000 athletes from 24 countries will be competing in 27 sports at venues throughout Apia and on Savai’i in July.

Just over 2,300 medals will be awarded, with Open Water Swimming being the first medal event of the Games on 8 July, and the final day (20 July) having seven medal events (athletics, basketball 3x3, football, netball, touch, triathlon and volleyball).

There will be 323 individual medal ceremonies.

Confirmed - Baby deaths in Samoa caused by incorrect vaccination procedure

The two nurses implicated in the tragedy, Luse Emo Tauvale and Leutogi Te'o, pled guilty to manslaughter last week and will be sentenced later this month.

The Director General of Health, Leausa Dr Take Naseri, said every vial of the vaccine should be mixed with one vial of dilutant, but the vaccine was mixed with something else.

He said he's worried many parents have stopped taking their children to get any vaccines at all.

RNZI correspondent in Apia, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says it won't be easy convincing parents the vaccine is safe.

Samoa’s Don Opeloge holds new world record at IWF

The 20 year-old is the new record holder after he scooped two gold medals.

Opeloge came in sixth place in the “snatch” category, lifting 151kg, but, came back strong in the “clean & jerk” category with 198kg, breaking the World Youth Standard Record of 191kg.

He lifted a total of 349kg.

Mohammed Hosseini of Iran came in second after lifting a total of 348kg.

The 19 year-old, in the “snatch” category broke the World Youth Standard Record of 155kg, he lifted 157kg. He came in third place in the “clean & jerk” category, lifting 191kg.

More Samoan church ministers in court on tax charges

According to the Samoa Observer all of the accused have been remanded and will appear on 29 August for what is expected to be a two day hearing.

This is the second group of CCCS Ministers charged under the new tax laws.

The first group of 20 will have their hearing on 1 July.

The church, at its general conference last month, set aside money to cover the ministers legal fees.

     

Lankan weightlifting teams for Samoa

This event is named as the selection trial for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, 2020.

In recent times, weightlifting has been Sri Lanka’s most successful sport, winning several medals for the country. At the last Asian Games in Jakarta, Sri Lanka returned home without winning a single medal.

However, at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, 2014, the solitary medal was won by weightlifter Sudesh Pieris; while at the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, three weightlifters won medals, including a solitary silver from Indika Dissanayake.
