Dr Naseri appointed Director General of Health in Samoa

Samoa Cabinet at its meeting Tuesday approved Dr Naseri’s appointment.

Four applicants were interviewed for the position and the panel upon their meticulous assessment of each of the applicants’ merits recommended Dr. Naseri to the post.

Dr Naseri holds a Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Queensland, Australia and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Papua New Guinea.

Convicted Samoan killer escapes from prison

Suitupe Faamoe Paufai escaped Wednesday and Samoa Prisons and Correctional Services notified police of his escape.

Paufai is from the villages of Vailuutai, Faleatiu and Fagamalo Savaii.

Police are appealing to the public to call 22222 or go to a nearest police station if they have any information on the whereabouts of Paufai.

This is the second report of an escape in less than a fortnight.

On 29 April, two teenagers who were charged for several criminal offences escaped from custody at Tafaigata Prison.

Samoa village cracks down on women who beat up husbands

The Gagaifolevao village council made the decision at a recent meeting, claiming wives are equally guilty of physical abuse.

The government women's representative for the village, on the south western coast of Upolu island, told Newsline Samoa the council found an alarming increase in husband bashing.

Moli Kolio Su'a said the council concluded, that while violence against wives can be more visible, they had failed to see the abuse where the wife was the aggressor.

The IRF is the official platform of the Island Resilience Partnership, a public-private partnership designed to help small-island developing states achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals like Samoa, an island in the South Pacific that is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Basketball issues 2019 Pacific Games schedule

Technical Delegate Amanda Jenkins says the venue and team preparations are on track.

"It's exciting this is the time first we have qualifying pathways for this event. Any team who underestimates their opponent will be the ones who will not progress."

Jenkins is certain basketball teams from the Oceania region will be putting on their best performances to win a spot in the FIBA Asia Cup Pre-Qualifiers.

Apia city clean-ups planned before Games

Marine litter is a global issue that negatively impacts the environment, people and coastal economies around the world.

In Samoa it is estimated that in 2017 around 9,000 tons of plastic is generated each year. This equates to roughly 3.5 large garbage truck-loads of plastics collected every day. If not managed correctly it could end up in the oceans.  

Samoa resort to add adults’ area

Owner Gavin Brightwell says the resort has always been family friendly and will keep that side of the business.

‘The family market has made this resort successful,’ he says. However, the dedicated adults area, with approximately 18 newbuild rooms, will add a new aspect to the property.

‘They will all have sea views and there will be a grove of coconut trees with a wide pathway.

‘We are just keeping up with trends, so couples can enjoy all the facilities of Saletoga but also have a quieter area to themselves.’
