Defendants must be informed of their rights, says Samoa CJ

Vui Clarence Nelson declared a mistrial in the case of a woman who tried to defend herself because she could not afford a lawyer.

Newsline Samoa reported he halted court proceedings on the third day of the case against Dora Enele, who allegedly stole money from the Seabreeze Resort while working as the accounts manager.

Justice Vui said he doubted the woman had been made aware of her rights and he ordered whole new court process on the matter after the defendant was granted legal aid and instructed to employ a lawyer.

Samoa starts countdown for Joss Stones’ live concert

Stone will be performing live at Funway Park on Tuesday, 7 May 2019.

So far, she had performed in 55 countries.

She was in Palau last week before going to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Fiji.

Now, she is on her way to perform in Samoa as well before her final concert that will wrap up her Oceania tour in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Her vision behind the world tour is to highlight the importance of protecting homegrown music, culture and the environment.

Auckland to play Samoa side in June

The match will be played at a soon to be announced club ground in Auckland, with free entry to the game and the match to be livestreamed on aucklandleague.co.nz.

It will be the first time in a year the Auckland premier team have taken the field, following on from last year's 40-12 victory over the Tonga New Zealand Residents at Mount Smart Stadium.

APS launches new Community Awareness programme

The slogan for the programme is ‘Pets are Family’.

Prior to the launch, APS ran a slogan competition to get ideas from the community for a catch-phrase to spearhead the awareness program.me  Sixty-six entries were submitted. 

The winner of the slogan competition was also announced in the launching which is Aniva Clarke.

Japan assists with reconstruction of Samoa’s Taelefaga Primary School

Maugaoleatuolo Shinya Aoki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa handed over the project to the school at a recent ceremony.

The total fund of 224, 163.52 SAT was provided to the school committee under Japan’s Grand Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) last year in December.

The current school building had experienced constant leakage of water from the Southern side that rendered 4 classrooms that are believed to be unusable for most of the times throughout the year and had caused deteriorations to its’ toilet facilities.

Small States discuss disaster risk reduction in Samoa conference

Participants were also able to take stock of progress made towards some of the important frameworks that the small island states are a party to, namely the SAMOA Pathway and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Samoa 2019 Pacific Games receive $100,000 donation

Beatrice Ott, representing the local family company which operates in construction and engineering, made the cheque presentation to Tagaloa Su’a Faafouina Su’a, director of sponsorship for the Pacific Games.

“We are extremely grateful to the Ott family for their generous donation,” said Tagaloa.

“$100,000 is not a small amount of money and will assist greatly in our preparations as we draw closer to the Games.

“We, at the Pacific Games continue to be overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring support from our local businesses.

Hand grenade that caused bomb scare in Samoa a dud

The discovery prompted widespread interest and speculation after it was found in Savai'i.

But the police have said it was empty and was nothing more than a souvenir.

Acting Police Commissioner, Papalii Monalisa Tiai-Keti said two officers from the Ministry of Police whp were trained whislt working in the United Nations safely removed the grenade and destroyed it in a safe place in Savaii.

The officers were assisted by the Ministry of Natural Resources amd Environment and Customs Department.

 

Samoa's CEO of Justice contract terminated

The cabinet has endorsed a recommendation by the Public Service Commission who investigated a number of allegations of misconduct and breach of duties against the CEO.

RNZI reports a termination letter was served on Papalii Thursday.

The chief executive was suspended last month with a senior officer of the court, one of the assistant CEOs.

The Commission has yet to decide on the assistant chief executive, Ve'atauia Faatasi Puleiata, who is accused of using a government vehicle for his family business.

Incompetence blamed for Samoa prison breakouts

Levaopolo Rosa To'oese Siaosi told TV1 the recent escape of seven remand prisoners was because of a lack of oversight by an officer.

She said the officer responded to what they thought was a medical emergency and was struck by a block when they opened the door.

The detainees then rushed out.

Levaopolo said normal practice is for two officers to open a door, but this didn't happen.

She said the department is understaffed, with 60 prison officers controlling 400 detainees.
