Samoa extends measles State of Emergency

The Extension Order was signed by the Head of State, Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II this evening, (14th December 2019) at the advice of Cabinet.

There has been a change to the Order regarding public gatherings.

All public gatherings must not include the presence of children up to the age of 14.

All Children up to the age of 14 years, must show proof of immunisation in order to board any inter-island ferry in Samoa.

Samoa activates National Emergency Operation Centre for measles outbreak

The NEOC has been set up as required by the National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP) under the National Disaster and Emergency Act 2007.

The Government said the NEOC will be responsible for planning, operations, logistics, community welfare and public information management safety and legal section.

Before the Proclamation of Emergency, the Ministry of Health (MOH) activated its Emergency Operation Centre at Motootua on 11 November 2019 to coordinate efforts on mitigating the spread of the Measles Outbreak.

Samoa declares state of emergency over measles outbreak

The acting prime minister and Minister of Health, Faimalotoa Kika Stowers Ah Kau, made the declaration regarding the current outbreak Friday night.

Faimalotoa's announcement came after a special cabinet special meeting ran late into the evening.

She said a national disaster committee meeting will outline measures to put in place for all government ministries and corporations to work together in order to stop further spread of the disease.

The national disaster committee was scheduled to meet Saturday.

     

Trump approves Louisiana state of emergency

Storm Barry has been gathering speed over the Gulf of Mexico in recent days.

Officials say sustained wind speeds have grown to 50mph (80km/h) and may still reach hurricane strength by the time it makes landfall.

It is expected to bring a storm surge and heavy rainfall to the city of New Orleans - which has already seen thunderstorms and flash floods.

The National Weather Service warns that flooding from the slow-moving storm poses the greatest risk.

Montreal declares state of emergency over flooding

About 1,200 military personnel have been deployed to support emergency services responding to the flooding.

In a statement announcing the 48-hour state of emergency, the city of Montreal said forecasts suggested that the situation would not be short-lived.

Environment Canada was warning that water levels in the Rivière des Prairies were expected to rise by 20 centimeters overnight, weakening dikes, breakwaters and dams set up in key areas to prevent water infiltration, the statement said.

Charlotte shooting: State of emergency amid protests

One protester is in a critical condition after a "civilian on civilian" shooting, the city said.

Macedonia blocks migrants on border with Greece

The government said it is deploying troops as it tries to stem a surge of migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Macedonian police spokesman Ivo Kotevski said both police and the army will control the 50-kilometer (30 mile) stretch of the border in order to stop a "massive" influx of migrants coming from Greece.
