Kiwi UFC fighter Mark Hunt up one spot in rankings after knockout win

Kiwi knockout king Mark Hunt is up one place in the UFC rankings after his devastating first round finish of American Frank Mir in Brisbane on Sunday.

The 'Super Samoan' was the eighth-rated heavyweight fighter when the world's premier mixed martial arts organisation released their latest rankings on Tuesday (NZ time).

Hunt, 41, traded places with American Josh Barnett in the only change within the top 10 of the division in the media-generated rankings.

Despite defeat, 36-year-old former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mir remained at No 10.

Entering the fight on the back of a first round knockout victory against Brazilian Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva in November last year, Hunt needed little more than three minutes to land the decisive right hand and send Mir to the canvas in the main event on Sunday.

It was another 'walkoff' knockout for the south Auckland-raised fighter, who took one look down at a prone Mir, shrugged his shoulders and moved out of the way to allow referee Marc Goddard to stop the contest.

The victory was Hunt's sixth KO/TKO win in seven UFC victories and extended his overall MMA record to 12-10-1.

After the bout, Hunt sent a warning to the leading UFC heavyweights in his quest to claim the belt for the first time.

"I'd fight any of the top guys," Hunt said in the post-fight press conference.

"I could re-match any of those guys; JDS (Junior Dos Santos), Stipe (Miocic), the guy with the belt - Fabricio (Werdum). I've never lost a rematch.

"It doesn't matter where we party, I can party anywhere."

Dan Hooker made it two out of three for New Zealand fighters in Brisbane by submitting Filipino Mark Eddiva with a guillotine choke in the first round.

Fellow Kiwi James Te Huna's future in the UFC was left hanging by a thread after he suffered his fourth successive first-round defeat.

Making his return to the octagon after a near two-year absence, Te Huna (16-9) was knocked out by Canadian Steve Bosse 52 seconds into their fight.
