Top refs to officiate at Vailima Marist rugby sevens tournament

Anthony Moyes and Matt O'Brien are in Samoa for the international Vailima Rugby sevens tournament this weekend as special guest referees for the series.

Two of the best in the business Moyes and O'brien have officiated multiple finals matches in International HSBC Sevens tournaments.

They, as referees however have always been the talk of the circuits following some crucial games.

"The players are always good, us refs rarely have any problem with players, but it’s the coaches that seem to always have a debate with us after games about how some things should have gone," Anthony Moyes said during an exclusive interview with Loop Samoa.

Moyes says referees have been learning a lot about how to deal with these issues, and have developed a professional manner in resolving complaints lodged.

"We have become used to it, and as you know we refs also are trying our best to manage games without mistakes, so we have developed a fine way of responding to these things," he said.

So what does the veteran referee think of Samoa's sevens?

"The Samoa sevens team though, they have a knack of getting off to a bad start always, and having bad first days in tournaments, but they always finish really strong," he added.

Moyes and O’Brien will be officiating some games in the International Marist sevens tournament in Apia this weekend, as well as hosting a clinic for local refs all for the sake of development.

"This is very crucial for Samoa in growing as a strong rugby nation, and it is an honor to be a part of it," he added.

"I’m going to be in the sun a lot more, and my skin color isn’t ideal for the weather so a lot of water and sun screen for me," Moyes joked.

The Vailima Marist international rugby sevens has attracted many prominent names in the likes of Waisale Serevi, referee Rasta Rasivhenge, and now Anthony Moyes and Matt O'Brien.
