Samoa's youth NGO focuses on road safety over festive period

With Christmas and New Year celebrations expected to peak over the next two weeks, the Samoa National Youth Council will be looking out for their own to ensure there are no tragedies.

The council is working with other organisations to try and minimize drink driving and binge drinking amongst young people and ensure they are safe while enjoying themselves in parties.

“Holidays are supposed to be the happiest time of the year for our country. However, we have witnessed how alcohol consumption has made it the exact opposite,” said SNYC representative Tuala Victor Vaauli.

The Samoa National Youth Council is mandated to enhance the development of youth for the social, economic and political stability of Samoa.

This week, the council held a forum where a plan for a road safety campaign was discussed.

“The forum has been a success so far. We have partnered up with the Ministry of Police and four of the most popular clubs in Samoa,”Tuala said.

“What we’re doing is forming a plan where we encourage youth who go out to take a designated driver with them or drive sober and the Police will be conducting road blocks around the prominent areas in Samoa,” he added.

SNYC has teamed up with Club X, Ace of Clubs, RSA, and Class Lounge Marina to help with the surveillance.

The group members have agreed to take it into their own hands to keep an eye out for young people who may be at a risk of drink driving or binge drinking.

“We know youth love to have fun but it’s always good to know your limits and for most they can’t distinguish that so we’re trying to find a way to help avoid tragedy this Christmas holiday,” said Tuala.
