Pandemic sports crowd world record set as 78,113 attend Australian Rules match

The crowd of 78,113 on Sunday topped the 67,000 who attended a Twenty20 cricket international between India and England at Ahmedabad last month.

The annual Anzac Day match is one of the traditional highlights of the AFL season, when sport combines with a solemn national commemoration. Anzac Day – April 25 – is the day on which Australians commemorate those who served in both world wars and in other conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

The match did not take place last year because of the pandemic and crowds since have been down on previous years.

NRL and AFL target May return

The National Rugby League, the most popular competition in the country's east coast, and the Australian Football League, which dominates in the south and west, are facing huge financial losses during the lockdown.

Both leagues were forced to abandon their seasons after they had barely started because of the government restrictions put in place to combat the spread of COVID-19, which has infected nearly 6,000 people and caused 49 deaths in Australia.

Tricks of the trade to keep bloodied AFL footballers in play

There's no signs of concussion and the phone is ringing.

The coach wants a status report. He wants his star player back on the field as soon as possible.

Brad Scott fined $30,000 by AFL for accusing umpires of bias

In the immediate aftermath of North Melbourne's nine-point loss to Hawthorn, Scott claimed he had been told an on-field umpire made the remark after a crucial non-decision went against the Kangaroos, but an investigation on Saturday morning proved the claims to be false.

Adam Goodes remembered as one of Sydney Swans' greatest

Goodes 35, made a low-key exit from the game he has graced since 1999, announcing his retirement to team-mates in the sheds after Saturday's semi-final home loss to North Melbourne.

He eschewed the fanfare of an emotional public farewell out on the field and the chance to be chaired off the ground, like retiring team-mate Rhyce Shaw.

At the end of an epic career and tumultuous season, Goodes leaves the game having chalked up 372 appearances, the eighth highest tally of all time and the most by an indigenous player.
