Samoans encouraged to discuss teen pregnancy

A young woman in Samoa was being given a ten year-jail term for infanticide this week.

Her case is just one of a number of incidents within Samoan communities involving babies being abandoned at birth or infanticide.

The Samoan Labour MP for Mangere, Aupito Su'a William Sio, said he's waiting to hear back from the police this week on whether they can provide a proper funeral for a child that was found in at an Auckland park.

Aupito said it's sad that a young woman, whoever she may be or whatever the circumstances are, felt the need to hide a pregnancy.

NZ MP explains name change after receiving a Samoan title

Su'a William Sio, will now be known as Aupito Su'a William Sio.

He says the explanation was issued so his colleagues who had questions about his new name suddenly appearing would understand the reasons.

According to Pacific Beat, Aupito says New Zealanders increasingly understand and have become more familiar with Samoan names and matai title.

Aupito was bestowed the Samoan title by his father following consent from his families last year.

He says he is comfortable carrying out his role as a parliamentarian as well as a Samoan title holder.
