Bribery charges against Samoa's PM and Minister of Agriculture dropped

The charges were filed by Elikapo Peni as a private prosecution based on allegations connected to the April 2021 General Elections.

The Samoa Observer reports the pair had entered not guilty pleas on the allegations.

Meanwhile, petitioner Peni also asked the court on Monday to withdraw 13 charges of bribery and one of treating against Minister for Public Enterprises, Leatinu'u Wayne So'oialo who had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Elikapo Peni had initially filed a total of 22 charges of bribery and treating against four other members of the FAST party.

Demetrius Smith said he paid $500 (£367) for an ID used by Mr Kelly, then 27, to wed Aaliyah, who was under age.

Mr Smith was giving evidence after he was granted immunity from prosecution.

Mr Kelly is on trial accused of sexual abuse, racketeering and bribery. He has denied the charges.

Speaking at the singer's trial on Friday in Brooklyn, New York, Mr Smith said the decision to obtain the document was made by Mr Kelly's "associates" after Aaliyah had said she was pregnant.

The case is tied to the scandal which led to the impeachment of the country's president, Park Geun-hye.

South Korea's special prosecutor's office announced the charges against the de-facto Samsung chief, along with four other company executives.

Three of those executives resigned on Tuesday following the announcement.

Samsung also said it was dismantling its corporate strategic office, a unit coordinating the various arms of the huge conglomerate.
