'Expect it!' Spencer, Rokocoko recall iconic RWC try 20 years on

Carlos Spencer's through-the-legs pass to Joe Rokocoko in the quarter-finals of the 2003 Rugby World Cup stunned the Springboks and delighted fans, helping the All Blacks seal a 29-9 win.

Almost 20 years on from the moment, World Rugby got the two All Blacks greats together to reflect on the try and how the piece of magic was conjured.

"Just a classic Springboks-All Blacks Test match," Rokocoko said.

"It's just so physical and quick and to add more spice to it, it's a quarter-final at a World Cup."

Rugby greats Carlos Spencer and Liam Messam will return to the ring against ex-Kiwis star Paul Whatuira and Samoan league prop James Gavet respectively, on a stacked bill topped by All Blacks legend Keven Mealamu and former Warriors star Wairangi Koop.

They will be joined on the card by undefeated pair Andrei Mikhailovich (17-0, 10 KOs) and Jerome Pampellone (12-0, 6 KOs), who are both on event promoter Dean Lonergan’s books.

The 46-year-old – who scored 291 points in 35 tests between 1995 and 2004 – will become an assistant-coach for the New Orleans Gold Major League Rugby (MLR) club, known as NOLA Gold.

“After recently coaching in South Africa, Japan, and New Zealand, I look forward to bringing all my experience and skill to the NOLA Gold outfit…working with coach Nate Osborne, the management group, and most of all the players,’’ Spencer said in a social media post.

Former All Black Carlos Spencer cut from Hurricanes coaching staff

In a statement following a report on 1 News, the Super Rugby club confirmed Spencer would leave the club immediately, as the 0-2 Hurricanes return to training on Tuesday for Sunday's match against the Chiefs in Hamilton.

"Due to the financial uncertainty created by Covid-19, we have agreed he will finish his contract early," the Hurricanes said.

"This means he will not be part of the Hurricanes coaching team for the remainder of Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa.

The Hurricanes will have an excellent mix of continuity and fresh ideas in their coaching ranks for 2019.

Forwards coach Richard Watt and scrum coach Dan Cron have committed to the 2019 group alongside next head coach John Plumtree who replaces the current and outgoing head coach Chris Boyd along with Jason Holland.

Joining the quartet will be former All Black first-five Carlos Spencer who will take on the role as assistant coach.
