USP crisis continues as Fiji govt halts funding

This comes after months of conflict at the regional institution between the governing council and the university management.

Fiji had allocated almost $US13 million in grants to the university for the current financial year.

Last week, the Chancellor and Nauru President Lionel Aingimea called for a special council meeting to determine the fate of two senior executives.

Mr Thompson held a press conference earlier this month and said he had accepted the decision by the council to exonerate Vice Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia of misconduct allegations.

Samoa's govt to decide how to spend donor measles aid

To date, 73 measles-related deaths have been recorded.

The government has said that 93 percent of the population has been vaccinated.

The state of emergency in Samoa, declared due to the epidemic, has been extended to 29 December 2019.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told media at a special measles-related press conference that lawmakers would decide this week where the money would be spent, the Samoa Observer reports.

His comment comes amid accusations the government is misappropriating the donations.

The Minister of Finance, Sili Epa Tuioti, said the money would be spent to meet several needs such as upgrading hospitals.

There have been at least 48 measles-related deaths since the outbreak last month, most of the dead being children under four years old.

The Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, said next month the government would table in Parliament a proposed legislation that would impose penalties against parents who ignored the compulsory vaccination order that had been ordered.
