The play, which debuted on Broadway, New York in 2015, is renowned for the way it uses rap and hip hop to tell the story of one of America's Founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton, as well as being celebrated for the way it incorporates minority and people-of-colour (POC) cast members.

Zayn Malik lashes out at Grammy Awards voters

"Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there's no nomination considerations. Next year I'll send you a basket of confectionery," the star tweeted.

Malik has never been nominated, either as a solo act or with One Direction.

Malik's latest album wasn't eligible for this year's Grammys because it came out after the cut-off date in August.

In a subsequent tweet, the British singer clarified that his comments were "not personal or about eligibility".

Drake calls for Grammys to be replaced after The Weekend is snubbed

"I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards," said the star.

"This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come."

The Grammys have yet to respond.

Drake was speaking after The Weeknd was overlooked in Tuesday's nominations. The star, whose album After Hours is the year's best-selling record in the US, was widely expected to feature in the album of the year and song of the year categories.

But the evening in Los Angeles, Grace was just a fan lucky enough to score good seats when Adele invited her up.
