Manchester United 1 Liverpool 1 In-form Ibrahimovic saves hosts

Paul Pogba had looked like being the villain of the piece for United, but Ibrahimovic's header – his 10th goal in 10 top-flight games – prevented a damaging defeat.

James Milner's 27th-minute penalty and sixth league goal of the season – awarded after a handball from Pogba – had looked like it would prove to be the winner at Old Trafford.

Steven Gerrard retires from football

"Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football," Gerrard, 36, said in a statement.

"I've had an incredible career and I'm thankful for each and every moment of my time with Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy."

Gerrard spent virtually his entire career at Liverpool having made his debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers in 1998. He is third on the club's all-time appearances list with 710, behind only Jamie Carragher and Ian Callaghan.

He scored 120 goals in 504 Premier League games.

Chelsea on top

It was the London side's sixth successive league victory without conceding a goal and put them on 28 points from 12 games, a point ahead of the Merseyside club and Manchester City.

The league's leading scorer, Costa, hit his 10th goal of the season to put them in front four minutes before the break.

'Boro, promoted last season, found it hard to make any clear opportunities against a solid Chelsea defence and remain in the bottom six, one point clear of the relegation places.

Liverpool takes top spot in EPL

Sadio Mane scored twice and Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Giorginio Wijnaldum got the others as Liverpool moved one point above Chelsea.

Coutinho had already hit the woodwork before Mane got things rolling with the opener and Coutinho and Can made it 3-0 at halftime.

Roberto Firmino added a fourth in the second half before Mane got his second and though Daryl Janmaat grabbed a consolation, Wijnaldum scored the sixth to send them top.

Earlier, Arsenal missed the chance to go top when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham at the Emirates.

Former Liverpool defender Josemi retires

The full-back has called time on his playing career after 15 seasons at senior level, having been without a club since leaving Indian Super League side Atletico Kolkata in November last year.

"The moment has come to say goodbye. To put a full stop on my career as a professional footballer," he posted via his official Twitter account.

"The moment to hang up my boots and bid farewell to what has been my life since I've been able to think.

"Eight clubs, 351 official games and the odd title, but above all a million experiences that I will never be able to forget.

Everybody needs good neighbours - Klopp hails Lallana

England international Lallana has flourished since Klopp took over at Anfield in October 2015 having initially struggled following his 2014 move from Southampton.

Lallana emphasised his growing importance to Liverpool with a superb strike in Sunday's 4-1 rout of Premier League champions Leicester City at a redeveloped Anfield.

Klopp says Lallana is flourishing after fully settling at the club, and the manager may even be able to pop into the 28-year-old's house for a drink from time to time.

Henderson: I'm the right man to lead Liverpool

The England international was hampered by numerous injuries, making just 17 Premier League appearances in his first season with the armband.

Henderson, 26, said his minimal contribution on the field meant he questioned himself as captain.

"I've never felt that I didn't want the captaincy but there were times last season when I was very down because I wasn't playing and I questioned my contribution as captain because of that," he said.

"I couldn't help on the pitch as I wanted to and so Milly [James Milner], as vice-captain, had to take the role on.

Markovic heads to Sporting

The Serbia international returns to Portugal after making just 34 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Benfica in 2014.

Markovic – who scored three goals during his time at Anfield – has struggled to break into the first team in the Premier League, and was sent out on loan last season with Fenerbahce.
