Samoan police gifted All Blacks jersey

The jersey was presented to the Police Commissioner Egon Keil by New Zealand police superintendent Don Allan.

The All Blacks played Samoa in Apia for the first time two months ago.

Mr Allan says the All Blacks were impressed with the security provided by the police.

"The All Black management was satisfied working with the Samoa police and ticked that box, hence that was a critical factor in the All Blacks coming here. For me there was a personal pride in being involved in this and to work again with my colleagues from Samoa police."

All Blacks struggle to win over Georgia

The All Blacks scored four first-half tries and led 22-10 at the break.

But Steve Hansen won't be happy with his team's performance as they made far too many errors.

Our rugby reporter says while the All Blacks had the vast majority of the ball they were generally unable to break the Georgian defence, while their handling let them down.

US book drive collects for Samoa

Launched in July, the book drive aimed to get 1,000 youth and children's books for Upolu and Savai'i Islands but donations now number nearly ten times that figure.

In addition to individual donations, Pittsburgh-based charity Brother's Brother will be supplying a 20-foot shipping container of text books and children's literature to arrive in Apia in mid-November.

About 9,000 books are expected to leave Pittsburgh later this week.

Samoa schools rugby team eyes first win

The Samoans were thrashed 67-3 in their first match against New Zealand but put in a better showing against Australia, losing 39-18.

Head coach Etimani Faamoetauloa says those games proved too tough for his players but they tried their best.

He says they are getting better but still need to take it up another few levels.

U20 World Cup spot up for grabs for Oceania women

PNG replaced South Africa as World Cup hosts in March, gifting them automatic qualification and a second berth for Oceania.

Hosts Tonga face a tough test in today's opening match against defending Oceania champions New Zealand, who have been on an unbeaten run since 2002.

Coach Penateti Feke was a part of the Tongan team at July's Pacific Games.

She's selected four of her teammates from that event, while nine have experience from last year's Under 20 tournament.

Samoan waste plastic could be converted for 3D printing

Lionel Taito-Matamua, who studies design at Wellington's Victoria University, says when he attended his grandmother's funeral in Samoa he was shocked to see the sheer volume of waste in the country.

He says that inspired him to devote his Master's thesis to try and find a way to help Samoa make use of its waste plastic, by turning it into something useful and helping the environment.

He says that can be done with 3D printing.
