Samoa's measles state of emergency: Police out in force

The country is shutting down for two days so mobile medical teams can visit people at home who haven't been vaccinated and give them the jab.

The lockdown applies to almost everyone except essential services. Private vehicles are also banned on the roads from 7am until 5pm today.

More than half the country has now been vaccinated, but in the next 48 hours, the government aims to boost that to at least 90 percent.

New lead in case of missing Samoan man

Thirty-five-year-old Semi Le'au of Solosolo was last seen heading for a swim at the Ocean Club Resort, at Maninoa in the early hours of the morning of 23 July.

According to the Samoa Observer, Police Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil confirmed police have a new lead that they are investigating.

Fuiavailili wouldn't say any more on the matter for fear of jeopardising the investigation, but an unidentified woman has reportedly been banned from leaving the country until the investigation is completed.

     

Hong Kong extradition protests: Thousands join Kowloon march

Protesters marched in an area popular with mainland Chinese tourists, in a bid to explain their concerns over a controversial extradition bill.

Hong Kong enjoys rights and freedoms not seen on mainland China, including free speech and the right to protest.

Later on Sunday riot police charged a group of protesters with batons.

Police had warned the group to disperse. Demonstrators were seen using umbrellas to defend themselves from the charge.

Footage from the scene showed police detaining several protesters.

Samoa police investigate discovery of suspected live grenade in consignment

Police officers were called to a building Monday morning after a Customs officer found the grenade during a routine inspection of a shipment that had arrived from overseas.

The Ministry of Police issued a notice advising the public to stay away from the area until it was declared safe.

Local media report of the discovery of a suspected live grenade and equipment used to administer methamphetamines.

     

Samoa to use auxiliary police during Pacific Games

Newsline Samoa reports Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil confirmed the temporary measure to dilute the heavy workload of security for athletes, officials and spectators that is expected to be faced by the 700 local regular force.

He said more police officers will be needed to cater for the many sporting venues.

Fuiavailili said no police officers will be on leave at this time.

"They will all be working during the Games."

He said they were already seeking to use teachers from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture as auxiliary officers.

 

Samoa police handle social media threat against PM

The threat was posted by Saute Sapolu, a Samoan man living in the United States.

The threat was made in a video that went viral in Samoa before being taken down by police.

Mr Sapolu is a brother of the Samoa based lawyer Unasa Iuni Sapolu, who condemned the threat and called for the prime minister to be respected.

In his weekly radio interview, Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi said the police were communicating with US authorities on the matter.

Samoa Police arrest dad for attempted sexual violation of his daughters

A police statement said officers from Faleolo responded to an attempted Sexual Violation call on 5 December after a woman lodged a complaint.

The suspect allegedly attempted Sexual Violation and Assault with intent to Commit Sexual Violation with his daughters aged 16 years and 18 years respectively.

He has since been charged with Attempted Sexual Violation and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

Samoa Police investigate child’s death

According to a police report, a nurse reported that a girl was declared dead on arrival at Foalalo District Hospital last Thursday night.

Family members claimed that the girl suffered from prolonged health issues.

The deceased was transferred to Malietoa Tanumafili II Tuasivi awaiting the doctor’s findings for the cause of death.

Vaitoomuli Police Post responded to the call and an investigation is underway.

 

     

Samoa PM wants removal of police involved in affairs

Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi said the commissioner had yet to fully implement his decision last year to weed out at least one half of police 'couples' in the force.

Tuila'epa is also the Minister of Police and was speaking at a police graduation ceremony.

The Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil has been given until the end of this year to act on the directive which forces a couple to choose who of them would remain in the force.

Police called as Jordie Barrett eats McDonald's in the wrong house

The 21-year-old had played in the Hurricanes 30-14 loss to the Highlanders in the southern city on Friday night.

Barrett fronted media on Sunday morning at Wellington Airport, on his way to the All Blacks' camp in Auckland, saying: "I was not intoxicated". He apologised for the incident.

"I can't say I'm embarrassed by what's happened, I'm just disappointed with the events that have unfolded. I don't believe I've caused any harm to anyone.

"It was a human error, I walked into the wrong flat and then we left.
