The 47-year-old committed the offence in December 2019.

The Suva High Court heard that the man accompanied his friends to the victim’s house for a drinking party on Christmas Eve.

The victim’s family were also present at the party.

The court heard the former prison officer and the victim consumed a substantial amount of alcohol until the early hours of December 26th when the victim lost consciousness and fell asleep.

The court heard the witnesses saw the man having sexual intercourse with the victim while she was asleep.

Dad cops 18 years jail term for raping daughter

Justice Tafaoimalo Leilani Tuala-Warren ordered a suppression order on the identity of the victim and the defendant according to a Radio Polynesia report.

The victim is now 17 years old, married and a mother and she says she is in disbelief that her own father would do this to her.

She has not told her husband about what happened and has not seen her father or his family since the offence.

The victim was 14 when the incident occurred several years ago.

The 40-year-old father was convicted by Assessors in November last year.

Judge Fiti Sunia was sentencing Apisaloma Timo who was charged with two other men in connection with the assaults in October last year.

The trio picked up two 14 year olds, gave them methamphetamine and had sex with them.

Judge Sunia said there was evidence of an all round failure "in law enforcement, family support, parenting and up and down line."

India girl, 16, burnt alive after Jharkhand rape

Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the attacks in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.

Police said the elders had ordered the accused rapists to do 100 sit-ups and pay a 50,000 rupee (£550; $750) fine as punishment.

They were so enraged they beat the girl's parents then set her on fire.

"The two accused thrashed the parents and rushed to the house where they set the girl ablaze with the help of their accomplices," Ashok Ram, the officer in charge of the local police station, told AFP news agency.
