Samoa seasonal worker scheme to be expanded

Tentatively a pilot project to this effect will start before the end of the year, the Chief Executive with the Ministry of Prime Minister and Cabinet Agafili Tomaimano Shem Leo announced at the signing ceremonies this week of Memorandum of Understanding with villages also related the seasonal workers.

The binding agreement is geared to safeguard the integrity of seasonal employment partnerships with New Zealand and Australia.

Grumbling in Samoa over Malietoa title

This month, the three branches of Sa Malietoa in Samoa seemingly reached an agreement on who should hold the paramount title, unanimously deciding to bestow it on Faamausili Moli, a son of the late head of state and title holder, Malietoa Tanumafili II.

He made the comment in response to concerns raised by 24 MPs including a handful of Associate Ministers questioning why the teachers shortage situation has not been resolved yet.

“It’s a fact,” continued Loau. “And there are reasons why.
“Some teachers have left the country after securing permanent residency in New Zealand under the annual quota system.

“Others teachers have left the classrooms for better paying desk jobs within the sector and in the private sector.
“The services of others have been terminated for valid reasons.”

Alcohol Control Bill looms for Samoa

The new legislation is designed to tackle the growing threat posed by the abusive use of alcohol and unlawful production of liquor in Samoa.

“The need for reform of laws relating to alcohol is aimed at reducing harm such as criminal offending where alcohol is a significant contributory factor and is aligned with the Strategy for the Development of Samoa 2012-2016 for an improved quality of life for all,” said the Samoa Law Reform Commission, (SLRC) in its report to Cabinet.

Samoa’s village mayors to sign MOU regarding Seasonal workers scheme

The signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding, (M.O.U.) with village mayors from Upolu will take place tomorrow (Monday) at the STA Samoan Fale at 11:30am.

Signing ceremonies for Savai’i will be at the Apita o Pisaga next week Tuesday at 10:00am.

The M.O.U., according to the M.P.M.C’s Chief Executive Agafili Tomaimano Shem Leo is designed to represent the governments and the Samoan seasonal workers best interest in protecting the employment program for Samoans to work overseas on a temporary basis.

Samoa Revenue Ministry’s record revenue performance

In 2011, Tialavea says that MOR collected $420 million.
