Child dies in road accident after canine attack

The child was hit by a vehicle when she ran onto the road as she tried to avoid dogs that were chasing her.

According to police spokesperson Su’a Muliaga Tiumalu, the child died from head injuries.

“We are investigating the matter. Many factors are involved in cases such as these and while the driver of the car will be liable for reckless and careless driving, the owner of the dog will also be investigated,” Su’a said.

The mother of the victim sent her to the shop across the street from their home.

NZ Immigration watchdog message to Samoa, Tonga and Fiji: “Use NZ Licensed Immigration Advisors only”

The IAA is the agency responsible for issuing licences to overseas NZ immigration advisers and handles complaints about poor immigration advice. It was set up to promote and protect the interests of people receiving New Zealand immigration advice. However, the IAA does not provide immigration advice.

Pacific Guardians website reports her visit is part of an IAA campaign pushing the message to Samoans, Tongans and Fijians, “Anyone seeking New Zealand immigration advice should only use a licensed adviser or an exempt person.”

Pacific countries get visa-free access to Belarus

Passport holders from Samoa, Vanuatu and the Federated States of Micronesia can enter Belarus for up to five days if they arrive at the international airport in Minsk.

The president of Belarus signed a decree to ease travel for a broad range of countries, including the US.

In September, neighbouring Russia signed an agreement with Vanuatu for visa-free travel.

Fiji passport holders also have visa-free access to Russia but no other such access in Europe except to Ireland.

As a result the case was taken off the list of appeal matters to be heard by Justice Patu this morning.

“It is very disrespectful to the Supreme Court to have filed for an appeal and then not appear for the mention hearing. Therefore, I will throw that off the list of cases for this court,” he said.

Both the independent prosecutor Simativa Pelese and the defense lawyer were not in attendance.

Samoa’s education sector needs concerted effort from everyone, says Education Minister

Minister for Education Loau Keneti Sio says everyone is responsible for making this school year better than the previous year.

He made the comments as reports emerged of systematic errors in the 2016 results of the Samoa Secondary Leaving Certificate exam.

In one report, a lot of students passed their Physics exam with 120 marks out of a total of 100.

Some parents lodged their concerns with the ministry.

Minister Loau Keneti Sio acknowledged the concerns saying the focus should be on making the next school year exceptional.

Samoa tribunal probing suspended NPO Director

RNZ reports the tribunal was ordered by the Cabinet in last October after the police had filed traffic-related charges against Mauga.

However, Mauga was found not guilty after a trial last year.

A cabinet statement at the time said the tribunal would be appointed on the grounds that Ms Chang and Ms Lui had not used the statutory powers given to them in an appropriate manner.

They have allegedly breached Civil Service Values and Code of Conduct under the Public service Act of 2004.

Police call out growing barriers between parents and their children

A fourteen year old boy in Savai’i, committed suicide early this month after being told off by his mother.

Police spokesperson Su’a Le Mamea Tiumalu says the problem is much bigger than just suicidal thoughts and ideas.

“Samoa is changing with the many human rights and children’s rights we are beginning to implement. These are what police stand for, however, we can’t ignore the many times parents have called the police just to help with their children because they are beginning to rebel,” said Su’a.

He was responding to a report on Loop Samoa where police had indicated hope for new laws to help address children selling food and other items and roaming on the streets of Apia late at night.

In the last month, footage emerged of some children under 18 years of age attacking a man who was sleeping on the footpath.

There was also footage of some children fighting in front of a plaza in downtown Apia in broad daylight.

Marist St. Joseph’s Sports Club to hold International Sports Week

The Sports Week will include rugby sevens, netball, boxing, rugby 10s and touch rugby.

“The goal is to help push our sports development a little further. It’s what Marist sports stands for and it’s what we hope to do,” said Marist vice president Tupa’i Klaus Stunzner.

“It’s an important year for us because this is our 29th year as a club, and we’re growing, as so should our sports. So this is a great way for our sports club to contribute to the development of sports in Samoa,” Stunzner added.
