Samoa Rugby hosts first Women's Rugby Conference

About 1800 women are currently involved in rugby in Samoa.

The SRU's Women's Development Officer Toluiva Keneti said 15 secondary school teachers have been selected as female rugby ambassadors to attend the inaugural conference and participate in level one coaching and refereeing workshops.

One party state a norm for Samoa: political observer

Majority of the seats in Parliament have been occupied by HRPP with only two seats to Tautua Samoa party.

This means there would be no opposition party at all, making Samoa a one party state. With that being said it is always a two way street.

Critics are saying Samoa being a one party state could be chaos as there would be no opposition to keep the government in check. While some experts are saying Samoa has been a one party state for some time anyway, technically.

Samoa has new AG and prosecutor

The former head of the Attorney General's criminal division and senior lawyer, Precious Chang is the first Director of Public Prosecution to be appointed after Parliament last year separated the criminal prosecution division from the Attorney General's office.

The police prosecution is now under the Public Prosecution office.

Female MP chosen as Samoa deputy PM

It's the highest executive position that a woman has ever reached in the history of Samoa's government.

Her selection was made at a meeting of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) after voters went to the polls and gave the ruling party of Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi its biggest landslide victory in a 30-year rule.

Samoa's ruling party given resounding mandate in elections

The governing Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) of long-time Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi won 44 of the 49 seats in parliament. It was the best ever election performance for the party, which has dominated the country's politics for most of the time since its formation in 1982.

The victory for the party of long-time Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has dealt a huge blow for the opposition Tautua Samoa Party, which has been decimated.

While the final count is yet to be released, it is all but certain that the ruling Human Rights Protection Party will command a two-thirds majority of parliament.

Polls close in Samoa's general election

There are 164 candidates standing, with almost half being members of the ruling Human Rights Protection Party.

Four candidates, including the caretaker prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, are running unopposed in their constituencies.

Liquor ban for Samoa's election

The ban will be from midnight tonight until 6 o'clock on Saturday morning.

Originally, the ban was to begin last night, but the hotel association, restaurants and bars urged for it to be changed to tonight, saying tourism would be affected.

A temporary liquor ban has been imposed for every general election in Samoa.
