Police investigating Samoan market fire, witness suspects gas bottle

The blaze started around 6pm on Saturday night, at the Savalalo market near the centre of Apia.

Our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says a portable gas stove is suspected to have caused the blaze.

He says he spoke to an eyewitness, one of the market's security guards, who saw smoke rising from one of the stalls.

Joy for Tonga while New Zealand win big on Match Day 3

For New Zealand the victory followed an 11-0 defeat of Samoa on Match Day 1, and inches them closer to securing qualification to the semi-finals.

Coach Gareth Turnbull made some changes to his side before the match and was pleased with how they handled the stubborn New Caledonia defensive formation.

Fire engulfs flea market in Samoa's capital

Our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the market caught fire at about 6pm local time, and the whole building in the centre of town was completely engulfed within an hour.

He says the market was closed when it caught fire and there was nobody inside.

Autagavaia says firefighters have brought the fire under control.
