Shootout prompts West Papua border closure

This follows reports of an Indonesian troop build-up along the border from communities in PNG's West Sepik province.

Indonesian-ruled West Papua has been gripped by weeks of protests and violent unrest which has left dozens of people dead.

Amid a security forces crackdown, concern has been raised in neighbouring PNG about another potential influx of West Papuan refugees

PNG's Immigration and Citizenship Authority has advised that following a shootout the border is closed to nationals from both sides until further notice.

Hong Kong protester shot by live round

The incident came as thousands of people demonstrated in defiance of a protest ban for the 70th anniversary of Communist rule in China.

Though people have been shot by rubber bullets in previous protests, this is the first injury from a live round.

In the Chinese capital Beijing, 15,000 soldiers paraded with advanced military hardware to mark the anniversary.

Nearly four months of protests in Hong Kong have challenged Chinese President Xi Jinping's vision of national unity.

Police say the gun-owner did not notice he had dropped his firearm.

Lack of Ballistics Experts Hinder Police Work

Police spokesperson Sua Le Mamea Tiumalu says the Police have released the body for burial but some matters remain unresolved.

“Right now we don’t have anyone locally who can determine which gun fired the bullets that took the life of the victim and to bring in an expert from overseas costs a lot of money,” said Su’a.

“We have students who are studying this area of police investigations in ballistics, but they are not in a position to stand in court as a witness so we are short on the proper staff we need,” he added.

She did not confirm the number of victims.

A local reporter tweeted that people are being evacuated from the Inland Regional Center, a non-profit medical and health organisation.
