Treble-chasing City, who wrapped up the title when second-placed Arsenal were beaten at Nottingham Forest yesterday, have won 12 successive games in the top flight.

They have 88 points from 36 matches, seven more than Arsenal who have just one match remaining. Frank Lampard's struggling Chelsea side are languishing in 12th spot with 43 points.

Arsenal, who enjoyed an eight-point lead over City as recently as mid-March, needed at least a point to stay mathematically in the hunt, but went down 1-0 this morning.

Reuters reports City, who host Chelsea on Sunday, have 85 points with three games to play, while Arsenal are on 81 with one game left.

It is City's seventh Premier League title since they were bought by Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2008 and they are now just two wins away from completing a treble only previously achieve by Manchester United in 1999.

Erling Haaland needed only three minutes to score his record-equalling 34th Premier League goal of his debut season in England, the Norwegian tucking away a penalty.

It moved him level for the single season scoring record of Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

The Norwegian also became the first player in England's top flight to score 50 goals in all competitions in a season since Tom Waring did so for Aston Villa in 1931.

Liverpool remain on course for an historic quadruple, having won the League Cup, they meet City in the FA Cup this weekend and are just a point behind City in the race for the Premiership.

The visitors were gifted the opening goal in the fifth minute when Cancelo acrobatically crossed for Ruben Dias to head into an empty net after a mix-up between Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and defender Ciaran Clarke.
