Samoa launch latest Development Centre in Savai’i

The programme will see over 100 players from grades U-10 to U-15 take part in technical development and game training sessions twice weekly, while goalkeeping sessions will also take place once a week.   

The launch follows on from a programme that ran in 2020. Sessions will be facilitated by football coaches on Savai’i. 

FFS Technical Director Jess Ibrom said this is a stepping stone for further player development in Samoa.  

“These programmes are fundamental for children to find a passion in football long term,” Ibrom said.   

Project to improve water quality in Upolu and Savai’I villages

The Japan International Corporation Agency in Samoa and Samoa Water Authority signed an agreement this week that will see villages access clean drinking water.

The project is titled “Capacity Enhancement Project for Samoa Water Authority in Cooperation with Okinawa” to phase 2.”

JICA Samoa said the CEPSO phase 2 of the project will specifically contribute to the improvement of water quality in identified villages from both Upolu and Savaii.

“The project aims at improving the two Water Supply Schemes (W.S.S.), namely Fuluasou EU, Upolu and Palauli, Savaii.”

Samoa’s SSAB launches online shopping service

The company launched the online shopping services during its 10th anniversary in Savai’i, today.

Savai’i’s outlet Managing Director, Fuimaono Fritz said they are bringing down the prices of all their products throughout this week.

“To celebrate SSAB Savaii’s 10th Birthday we’re offering the most affordable deals on Whiteware, Electronics, Student Stationery and so much more in store!”

The woman behind the success of SSAB, Chief Executive Officer Tofilai Fiti Leung Wai was also present at the celebration.

Samoa public servant arrested for abusing hotel workers

Lupeomanu Pelenato Fonoti, who is in charge of the quarantine division at the agriculture ministry, will appear in court on 30 July.

However, the Samoa Observer reported that an investigation has also been opened into how the police at Asau handled the complaint against him.

Lupeomanu claims the officer in charge of the station is the husband of the hotel where the incident took place, and that officers were unprofessional.

     

Pacific Games torch relay begins on Savai'i

To have the students carry the baton brought the communities together in unison, manifesting the slogan of the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games, “one in spirit.” 

The Savai'i leg of the relay will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday before coming to Upolu.

People of all ages flooded the streets as the torch baton for the Games made its way through and the event was live-streamed on Facebook.

New prison complex for Samoa’s Savai’i Island

The prison complex will cost $600,000 tala.

It will house 100 prisoners and an administration building.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi performed the groundbreaking ceremony last week.

The project is part of the national initiative by the Samoa Prisons Authority to upgrade prison conditions in the country.

     

Savai'i ready to deliver another great event

The 2019 Pacific Games Boxing Competition will be held on the island and the organising committee is counting on the public to wholly support the event.

Organising committee Chief Executive, Falefata Hele Matatia, said the decision to hold the competition in Savai’i is no accident.

“It’s about inclusiveness to ensure that Savai’i plays a leading role in the Pacific Games,” Falefata told the press conference.

Man dies after scuffle at a pub in Savai'i

The victim died after a fight with the 29 year old suspect at a pub in Savai’i last weekend.

“It was a typical night out, they had drinks and the deceased got into a scuffle with another they had been hanging out with. The fight eventually ended with the deceased being taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead,” said Police spokesperson Su’a Muliaga Tiumalu.

The cause of the man’s death has not been revealed.

Immigration Office opens in Savai’i

Prime Minister and Minister for MPMC, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi officially opened the office, which is located on the second floor of the Salelologa Market, and encouraged the people of Savaii to make good use of the services provided.
