Of the new cases, 4712 were reinfections.

RNZ reports there were also 211 people with Covid-19 in hospital as of midnight Sunday, with seven cases in ICU.

The seven-day rolling average of cases was 1605.

Last week 11,544 new cases were reported and 12 further deaths attributed to Covid-19.

Of the new cases, were 3813 reinfections.

Of the deaths being reported today, one was from Northland, 15 were from the Auckland region, two were from Hawke's Bay, two were from Taranaki, one was from MidCentral, two were from Whanganui, five were from Wellington region, three were from Nelson Marlborough, four were from Canterbury, one was from West Coast and three were from Southern.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that this is a drop from the nine cases recorded in the previous weekly situational report.

MOH said, “The results came from both PCR and rapid antigen test - RAT from all sites with the cumulative number of Covid-19 positive cases (border and community cases) climbing to 16,008.”

“From 2pm 18 December 2022 to 2pm 25 December 2022, the Ministry recorded nine positive cases from all sites as well.”

A total of 15,816 Covid-19 positive cases were detected in the last year since the first community transmission was reported.

There are now 400 active cases.

RNZ Pacific reports four people with Covid-19 are in hospital - one of them in intensive care.

Local television says one Covid-9 patient died in hospital last week, but the death has not been included in the pandemic's tally.

There have been repeated calls for people to update their vaccination status as only 23 percent of those over 60 have had a booster.

Last year when the territory was hit by an outbreak of the Delta variant, more than 600 people died, of whom more than 94 percent had not been vaccinated.

Too many staff have been affected by the resurgence of the pandemic which since June has caused almost 1800 infections.

“We continued to implore the public to please remain vigilant and adhere to public health advice from time to time.”

The cases include 20 new community cases and 1 new imported case, taking the total number of cases (community and border) to 15,155.

The Ministry's latest reporting period data shows that 50 new community cases were reported from June 27 to 29.

The total number of community and border cases now stands at 14,964.

There were no Covid-related deaths during the period in review and the total number of deaths since 17 March 2022 remains at 29.

So far 158,240 rapid antigen tests have been given since the first community case was confirmed.

The Ministry continues to promote vaccination as the best defense against the severe effects of the virus.
