Top New Zealand judges and lawyers self-fund trip to Samoa to provide legal training

The group is treating the workshop as an opportunity to give back to the legal community, paying for the entire trip out of their own pockets.

Top New Zealand defence lawyer, Marie Dyhrberg KC, who is leading the group, says the workshop is also run regularly in Manukau, attracting lawyers from both defence and prosecutions.

 “What we’re wanting to do is to be able to demonstrate and give our learnings to people over the two days,” she says. 

Samoa to host Va’a World Distance Championship

The event which will be hosted by the Samoa Outrigger Canoe Association (SOCA) will be held in Apia from 10th to 19th August 2023. 

The venue will be the Samoa Tourism Authority (STA) grounds on the waterfront in Apia. 

The championship was originally scheduled for 2021; however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic it was postponed to 2023.

Earlier this week, the logo for the championship was launched at the STA Fale and was also unveiled by IVF President Laura Collins. 

Four-nations Rugby Challenge to return for first time since 2020

The tournament returns for the first time since 2020 due to the Covid-19 lockdowns.

RNZ Pacific reports National 'A' teams of Fiji, Japan, Tonga and Samoa will battle for the title.

It is the first time in 13 years that Samoa has hosted a World Rugby tournament - the last being the Pacific Nations Cup in Apia in 2010.

"We are excited to be hosting this event in Samoa after the last three years of the pandemic but also a start on what is an exciting year for rugby in our region heading towards Rugby World Cup in France.

University of Canterbury honours top Samoan Judge

These were the words of Justice Vui Clarence Nelson, one of top judge’s in Samoa and the Pacific. 

PMN News reports the 67-year-old Samoan matai (high chief) will receive an Honorary Doctorate – Doctor of Laws from the University of Canterbury (UoC) at a ceremony this Thursday.

Justice Vui grew up in and attended high school in Apia before being awarded a Government scholarship to study in New Zealand at the age of 16. He is also an alumni of UoC, having graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1977.

Woman charged after child dies in road accident

The 43-year -old woman, who is charged with negligent driving causing death, appeared before Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma.

The charge relates to a case where a child was died after being allegedly hit by a car last month.

Tala Fou reports the Prosecution asked the court for a two weeks adjournment to finalise charges against the defendant Anita Sesilia Iona Mateo.

According to Police they were informed of the tragic incident by the hospital where the child was treated and later died of severe head injuries.

New CEO of Samoa Ministry of Customs and Revenue appointed

Her appointment was approved by Samoa’s Cabinet during their meeting earlier this week.

A statement from the Office of the Press Secretariat said Fonoti has been appointed for a contractual term of three years. 

Fonoti started working at the Customs and Revenue Ministry as a Compliance Audit Officer in 2003 and remains at the Ministry to date.

Her acquired skills and abilities, strong leadership qualities and professionalism attest to her promotions over the last 20 years. In 2016, Fonoti was appointed as the Ministry’s Deputy CEO.

Man sentenced to imprisonment in Samoa for manslaughter

According to Talamua Online the man and four other defendants responded to their female relative's call for help after she was punched in the face.

The court noted her attacker intended to rape her.

The men had beaten the relative's attacker and he died from the seriousness of his injuries.

They were initially charged with murder, but the charge was lowered to manslaughter after legal counsel successfully argued the beating was provoked.

Samoan Engineering Officer receives scholarship to further studies in Japan

Mariner, who is from the village of Vaipuna, hopes to further research and gain more insights from Japan’s approaches in order to provide standard mitigation measures against tsunami waves proven to be beneficial to countries like Samoa.

Mariner has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) from the London South Bank University in the United Kingdom and is currently employed by Samoa Water Authority as an Engineering Officer.

FAO hands over IT equipment to support Samoa’s National Forestry Monitoring System

The equipment will support the establishment of a National Forestry Monitoring System (NFMS) and Forest Reference Level (FRL).

Samoa to host World Rugby Pacific Challenge 2023

The tournament, contested by the national ‘A’ teams of Fiji, Japan, Tonga and Samoa, will be hosted in Apia from 3-13 May, 2023.

After six consecutive editions organised in Fiji (2015-20) since its rebranding as the Pacific Challenge, the World Rugby-funded tournament is returning to Samoa in 2023 for an exciting competition contested by hosts Manuma Samoa, Fiji Warriors, Tonga A, and Junior Japan.
