New wheelchair from L.D.S. Charities changes life for 7-year-old

Sandra’s life changed extraordinarily when she received a wheelchair from L.D.S. Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

While her brothers moved about, attended school daily, played freely, and participated in all the physical activities children enjoy, Sandra could not.

When her brothers accompanied their parents to the Fugalei Market to help out at the family banana chips stall, Sandra stayed home.

According to her father, Lauano Aukuso, there is now a huge change in his daughter.

ASG restores some visa-free travel for citizens of Samoa

The ’30-day permit’ requirement does remain for Samoa passport holders wishing to travel to American Samoa, except that they have been exempted from providing medical and police clearances when applying for a 30-day permit, if they have no plans of residing or work during their stay in the territory.

Samoa News reports the change was made effective on 10 April, 2023 and was announced by Attorney General Fainuulelei Falefatu Alailima-Utu at the Atoa o Samoa meeting, held in American Samoa last week. 

Super Rugby Pacific: Moana Pasifika fall short in Apia clash

Australia announces budget support for Samoa

This was announced by Australia's Minister for International Development and the Pacific, and Samoa's Finance Minister.

The Ministers also announced a new eight-year partnership focused on Samoa's economic growth and governance priorities.

Called 'Tautai - Governance for Economic Growth', it will support Samoa's continued economic recovery from Covid, jointly delivering projects to improve livelihoods for Samoans.

Samoa Victim Support Group kept busy over Easter weekend

According to SVSG, the woman was allegedly physically abused by her husband all night, and she sustained injuries to her face.

She could not take care of herself, let alone, her children aged five-months, seven and eight years old.

A concerned neighbour who called the SVSG Helpline became the woman’s voice, and saved her life and that of her children.

Samoa's Environment Minister attends Copenhagen Climate Ministerial Meeting

The two-day meeting on 20 and 21 March was the first political high-level meeting following up on COP27.

The current and incoming COP presidencies of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates are hosting the meeting in the Danish capital together with Denmark.

The ministerial meeting aims to lay the path to a successful COP28 delivering on the Paris Agreement targets and COP27 conclusions.

New Czech diplomat presents credentials to Samoa Head of State

Ambassador Dub presented his Letter of Credence to Samoa’s Head of State, Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II recently.

The new Czech Republic Ambassador is accredited to Samoa with residence in Canberra, Australia.

Samoa and the Czech Republic established diplomatic relations on the 12th December, 1995.

Samoa Cabinet approves changes to vehicle importation

The announcement was made by Samoa's Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa during a media conference last Tuesday. 

According to Fiame, these vehicles must not be more than 20 years old and fit for purpose.

"Furthermore, the Cabinet has approved a special arrangement with strict conditions for the importation of 4 wheel drives and light truck vehicles for farmers only," she said.

"Government will strictly monitor this condition in observation of all related regulations and laws. 

"The 10 years prohibition order remains." 

 

New cross island road in Samoa to be constructed

Samoa's Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa said all necessary documentation and processes have been completed.

"Cabinet has also approved the construction of the Cross Island Road from Tanugāmanono to Siumu," she said at a press conference last week.

"Following the completion of all the necessary documentation and processes, the Tender’s Board recommends for Cabinet approval the resumption of this major project."
