MOU with APTC to strengthen Samoa’s skilled workforce

According to the Minister of Police, Prisons & Corrections Services, Faualo Harry Schuster, the partnerships through the MOU between Government institutions and the APTC represent a strong commitment towards the delivery of high-quality, accessible and relevant education and training for people in the workplaces.

“Education and training is a priority area for the Government of Samoa and is fundamental to the development and growth of our country,” he said.

Samoa PM urges world to save Pacific people from climate crisis obliteration

The world must step back from the brink of climate disaster to save the people of the Pacific from obliteration, the prime minister of Samoa has urged.

On the eve of a landmark report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is expected to deliver a scientific “final warning” on the climate emergency, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, Samoa’s prime minister, issued a desperate plea for action.

New Member of Parliament sworn in

The swearing in ceremony was held at the Parliament House, Mulinuu recently.

Before the official ceremony, the Speaker of the House, Papalii Lio Masipau read out the Warrant of Election signed by the Head of State, Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II and the Parliamentary Code of Ethics.

The seat for Vaimauga No.3 Constituency became vacant following the death of Tapunuu Niko Lee Hang.

This resulted in a by-election on 24 February 2023 which was won by Lautimuia.

Japan pledges $1 million in grant assistance to Samoa

A signing ceremony between the Ambassador of Japan to Samoa, Senta Keisuke and the Minister for Police and Prisons, Faualo Harry Schuster to formalize a new Grant Assistance for Japan’s Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) was held on Thursday at the Police Headquarters in Apia.

The ceremony was for two projects of up to USD 666,925 (approximately SAT 1,774,000) in total.

Samoa tourism earnings over $200 million

This was highlighted in a recent report on Visitor Earnings and Remittances for January 2023 issued by the Central Bank of Samoa.

The monthly report is the latest available indicators on the tourism sector and private remittances, with information sourced from the Central Bank, Samoa Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Customs and Revenue.

The report revealed that out of the total tourism earnings, New Zealand was the main source country with 46.7 per cent, followed by Australia at 29.5 per cent, USA (at 7.6 per cent) and ‘Other Countries’ (at 10 per cent).

FAST chair urges Opposition to reconsider petition against new MP

In a solemn address in Parliament yesterday, Laauli Leuatea Polataivao Fosi pleaded with the Leader of the Opposition to reconsider an electoral petition Human Rights Protection Party has lodged against the member for Vaimauga 3 constituency.

TV1 Samoa reports Laauli acknowledged that the new member Lautimuia Uelese Vaai left the session to see his lawyer.

However, he added that feelings and perceptions had changed since the appointment of Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo as the Leader of Opposition in the House.

Samoa’s Central Bank reports social media app for using its logo

The CBS says "please be advised that CBS does not endorse or relate to this game app in any way and does not take responsibility for anything that occurs with its usage. These activities are not in our mandate."

The CBS also says the use of its logo and images are illegal and fraudulent and it believes this constitutes a forgery of electronic data as per Samoa Crimes Act.

It said the use of the CBS logo in this instance is plainly to deceive potential users.

     

Samoa Health Ministry faces medicine shortages

“There will always be some shortages as also seen in New Zealand,” says Health Director Aiono Dr. Alec Ekeroma.

He revealed that the reasons can be, “shortages of raw materials, getting it here on time, and speed of payments.”

When asked about what has been done to address this issue, Aiono said, “many meetings discussing many options and more planned.”

Furthermore, the Director General explained that shipments are received every week and essential drugs are already stocked.

“Still waiting on some drugs that are needed for specific cases.”

Samoa records two new cases of measles

But the initial suspected case has been ruled out after tests were returned from New Zealand.

Government newspaper Savali reported the Health Ministry is maintaining its strict surveillance and monitoring duties for a potential outbreak of measles in the wake of alerts from New Zealand and Australia.

During the 2019 measles outbreak 83 lives were lost, mostly young children.
